On December 19, 2018, protests broke out in small cities throughout Sudan amid an economic crisis, eventually reaching the country's capital, Khartoum. It has been 100 days since fighting first broke out in Sudan between the army and paramilitary Rapid Support forces.
Thousands have been killed and millions left displaced.

On December 19, 2018, protests broke out in small cities throughout Sudan amid an economic crisis, eventually reaching the country's capital, Khartoum. These protests posed the biggest challenge to Sudan's longest-serving dictator, Omar al-Bashir, who throughout his regime did everything he could to remain in power. Bashir relied on various security sectors to protect him from being overthrown. However, his plan ultimately failed on April 11, 2019, when the country's army, the Sudanese Armed Forces, and a paramilitary force, the Rapid Support Forces, sided with the protesters and carried out a military coup, toppling Bashir.
The end of Bashir's regime brought hope to the protesters, but they remained skeptical about the men who had overthrown him. SAF’s Abdel Fattah Burhan and RSF’s Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo (aka Hemeti) took control of the country after the coup and made repeated promises to hand over power to civilians, which would put Sudan on a democratic path. But they continuously delayed fulfilling their promises and instead turned against each other, vying for power in Sudan. The two men have brutally interrupted Sudan’s pro-democracy revolution.
The fighting between the two men's forces started out in Sudan's capital, Khartoum, and spread all over the country. Recent ceasefire breakdowns have led to more bursts of violence, especially in Darfur, a region still reeling from the aftermath of a genocide at the hands of Bashir's regime.
Watch the latest episode of Atlas to understand how their feud has undermined the democratic aspirations of the protesters and put Sudan at risk of a civil war.

Sudan, ancient Nubia, is home to many unique natural and archaeological treasures. This land of the black pharaohs has even has more pyramids than its famous neighbour, Egypt – yet there are no visitors, no tourists, and no foreign travellers. Cut off from the rest of the world, Sudan, a former save haven for international terrorists, is now one of the most unstable countries on the planet.
Since gaining independence in 1956, the country has experienced 18 coup attempts. After thirty years under the military-Islamist dictatorship of Omar al-Bashir, Sudan experienced a brief period of democracy in 2019. This was short-lived however, as the country was subject to a new coup which bought General al-Burhan and his military junta to power in October 2021. Since then, Sudan has been completely closed off from the rest of the world.
Every week, thousands of citizens gather around the country to protest coup d’état – and women are the face of this revolution. They yearn for freedom after years of suffering under military dictatorship and sharia law, where they were routinely flogged and humiliated. One women explained her involvement in the fight for freedom, “We distribute these paint cans around the neighbourhood to announce our protests and we will write slogans in favour of the revolution”. By spraying these words of dissent around the city, these women risk prison and torture. Although the protesters know that they will be fiercely repressed and try to protect themselves the best they can, they can only make do with temporary shields and plastic helmets. Nothing to shelter them from the live bullets shot by the army – which even target doctors and young children. All the while, they run the risk falling victim to the relentless arbitrary arrests.
The political crisis has also worsened the economic situation with inflation rate running at 380%. Even before the coup, Sudan was one of the poorest countries in the world, now however, even middle-class people are finding it increasingly difficult to survive. More than two million city-dwellers have left to seek their fortune in the desert just to get by. There, they hope to find a few nuggets of gold to change their life…

The world seems to have given up on Sudan, as the UN Security Council recently voted to end its political mission to the country.
The UN mission was put in place in 2020 to help support a democratic transition in Sudan following the fall of its dictator Omar al-Bashir in 2019.
But this was cut short in October 2021 when army chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan assumed full powers in a coup.
Things got worse in April this year when fighting broke out between the Sudanese army and a paramilitary group known as the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) led by General Dagalo, leading to a full-scale civil war.
Now, the path to democracy seems all but over as the Sudanese authorities have ordered the UN to leave for good.
This limits the capabilities the UN has on the ground to monitor the deteriorating situation, as well as their ability to hold the two sides accountable for their actions.
Over 12,000 people have been killed in Sudan’s civil war, with nearly 6 million people being forced to flee their homes.
Evidence of widespread looting and mass executions of civilians has been reported across the country, with fears of a potential genocide in Sudan’s Darfur region.
